The most popular poker online game in the world today is Texax Holdem poker without any doubt. This following article is a short tutorial which will give you the basics of playing both limit and no-limit holdem. In any format of the game, holdem has 2-10 players at a single time. All the rooms have at least 6 players on each table while some tables might have 9-10 players.
Functionality and general rules
Every table will have a designated dealer or button that will have the advantage of acting last on every round except the first round of each game. The button moves to the left of the table to each player just after each hand is done. When the cards are not dealt as yet, the player who is situated to the left of the button plays a bet called as a small blind and the person to his/her left places a bet called the big blind.
The general rules say that the big blind is equal to the smaller of the two bets and the small blind is exactly half of the big blind. Sometimes during the later parts of the game, a player might be forced to place an ante which is in addition to the bets already placed.
How the game ends
When the blinds are placed, two hole cards will be given to each player which are placed face down. The player who is one the left of the player with the big blind will start by folding the cards, call the big blind or get a raise done. All the other players in the order will follow suit. In the limit version of the game, the raise can be of the lower amount of the bet in the first couple of rounds and the higher end of the bet in the last two rounds. This can be ignored in the no-limit version where the raise can be of any amount but the amount needs to be at least twice the amount of the last raise. The game finally ends when all the cards have been folded or the bets have been called.
Understanding the cards
There are a total of three cards which are placed face up in the centre of the table and are the community cards. These are called the ‘flop’. All the players use the community cards with the hole cards to form a 5 card hand. The second round of the game starts when the hand is still with the person who is on the left of the button. The options which are available out here are to either check to the next player, to place a bet or to call. The fourth option is to raise the stakes if there has already been a bet. When all the players are done, then a fourth community card (Turn) is placed and the next round of betting ensue.
River and the best hand
The round which is currently on and the last round are the ones in which the bets are twice of that of the first rounds. The last card is placed which is known as the “River” and the betting for the final round start. After all the players have completed their betting, each of them makes the best five card hand by mixing one or both hand cards and three from the community cards. The player with the best hand wins. In case of a tie, the pot is split in two. A tip before playing is to carefully check the playing rules of the room.
